Doug Nelson has been practicing law for over 20 years, with a focus on the areas of estate planning, real estate law, and general business services. He is licensed to practice law in the states of Ohio and New York. At Calkins Law Firm he will focus on estate planning, including the preparation of wills and trusts, as well as the purchase and sale of commercial and residential real property, leasing, general business, and corporate law.

Mr. Nelson is a graduate of the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and the New York University School of Law, and he previously served as a member of the adjunct faculty of Kent State University. There he enjoyed sharing his knowledge by teaching courses in Estate Planning and Probate Administration, Civil Law and Procedure, and Legal Ethics. He also previously worked as General Counsel and Director of Leasing for a local real estate management company, RMS Investment Corporation.

In his work surrounding real estate law, Mr. Nelson has represented buyers, sellers, landlords, and tenants. He is skilled in handling all aspects of the acquisition, disposition, financing, development, construction, and exchange of commercial, industrial, residential and multi-family real estate, including lease negotiation. Mr. Nelson’s extensive experience in commercial finance, tax valuation complaints, and corporate real estate has also enabled him to serve as a business advisor to his clients, guiding them through real estate structuring and other investment transactions.

Together with his other specialties, Doug Nelson is also experienced in general business and corporate law including commercial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and advising emerging and closely-held businesses. He is skilled in both the preparation and negotiation of a host of legal agreements. Mr. Nelson has also structured diverse joint venture, like-kind exchange, deferred sale, and financing transactions for real estate clientele.

Doug Nelson puts his broad experience to work when representing his clients, from individuals and family offices to tax-exempt organizations and financial institutions. His estate planning expertise covers a wide spectrum and includes estate and trust administration, estate and family business succession planning, and charitable gift planning.

His background enables Mr. Nelson to navigate the complexities of estate planning, especially when real estate holdings, life insurance, retirement plan assets, stock options, and other executive compensation plans are involved. He is also very in tune with the sensitive nature of estate planning, and works hard to accommodate special family considerations.

Mr. Nelson’s objective is to meet his clients’ needs and goals and he is prepared to use any means available, including sophisticated techniques such as personal residence and charitable trusts, grantor retained annuity trusts, and irrevocable life insurance trusts. Mr. Nelson’s expertise makes a potentially difficult and complicated issue less daunting, allowing Calkins Law clients to enact a sound, successful plan for their family’s financial future. Mr. Nelson can also draw on his deep well of real estate, tax, and business law knowledge when advising clients on their best estate planning options.
