In For a Dime, In For a Dollar––The Importance of Following Through

In business law, we are definitely a value leader. From the standpoint of cost effectiveness and when compared with our competitors--large, old-style firms--Calkins Law Firm is one of a kind in almost every way.

That said, it remains true across the board that clients should always be prepared to follow through. After committing to doing something, in this case taking on a legal matter, it's best to do it completely and without sparing effort. The old saying "in for a dime, in for a dollar" couldn't be more true here. Thankfully for our clients, that one dollar won't suddenly turn to ten, but nonetheless--if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing right. And that takes commitment.

Many of our clients, even those who do have substantial savings to work with, cannot afford to part with an unplanned bill for hundreds of thousands of dollars. So if we take on a case, we endeavor to keep our clients fully informed, preparing estimated budgets from the outset. This is because the last thing we or any client wants is to be unable to see a business transaction through or conclude business litigation because of a sudden lack of funds.

This concern doesn't just apply to our legal services. A recent client's case made it necessary to pay a damages expert a retainer in order to keep the ball rolling and keep them on the client's team. It was worth the expense to have this expert at the ready, whenever their expertise would come to bear on the case at hand. So in order to proceed as swiftly as possible to a positive conclusion we ensured that the retainer was paid. We thereby helped to facilitate progress and work toward our client's goal, which at the end of the day is typically to find an efficient and beneficial outcome to their situation. Had we hesitated or declined, the matter could have easily been prolonged and our client's interests and finances compromised.

In general, our focus remains unchanged: to achieve a swift, cost-effective, and positive end result for our clients. That said, we are not in complete control of timing or costs, and matters can sometimes drag on for a considerable period despite our best efforts. All the while, fees and costs can accumulate. This is the sad but true reality at times.

This exact type of scenario is why we commence every engagement with eyes wide open, doing our very best to budget for potential contingencies. That way, when we get involved in a matter on behalf of a client, we are comfortable that our clients can follow through and that there will be a dollar to follow every dime. Matters can still be pursued swiftly, even if we do end up hitting a few bumps along the way.

A Legal Team with Uncommon Sense

In the meantime, having ample assets to tackle whatever a case throws at us is invaluable. If that sounds like a measured approach to handling business law cases and you'd like to get to know us better, don't hesitate to reach out. We could be the very new age law firm you're looking for.
