Our Clients Are In Charge
At Calkins Law Firm, our sole objective (within the bounds of the law) is to further the interests of our client. We operate based on the simple rule that the client is in charge. And from experience, we can say that every client is different.
How Clients Differ
As practicing business law attorneys with deep expertise and vast experience, we know how to help our clients resolve their legal issues. Among other things, our well-developed sense of fairness and understanding of what will work in a particular situation help us to bring matters to a satisfactory resolution.
But we also know that every client is in a different situation with different goals and objectives. So what suits one might not suit another. We are focused on helping our client reach their goals and objectives in every matter that we handle. But it's true that regardless of our experience, we can't predict what clients want or need.
- One client may be determined to win a case and has both the time and resources to see it through, regardless of potential delays. To the extent that winning is a realistic possibility, we endeavor to assist the client to do that.
- Another client might be low on funds. In representing this client we might attempt to achieve or engineer a near term settlement. Our goal in this case is to accelerate the client's receipt of recompense and reduce ongoing litigation costs.
- When buying a business, one client may want us to do very extensive due diligence, unconcerned about resulting costs. This person is looking for an iron-clad purchase agreement and as much assurance as possible prior to making the deal.
- The next client could feel that they have a pretty good feel for the business to be purchased. This client typically trusts the seller and wants to proceed with the modern equivalent of a handshake.
Regardless of circumstance, we advise all clients of the approach that we recommend they take. But at the end of the day and after we fully inform them of relevant risks, we do what our clients want us to do. The client is in charge.
Different Clients, Different Adversaries
Clients and their goals differ, as do their adversaries. We let the client and their situation be our guides here, too.
After years in practice, we have a general sense of how people often act in any given situation. But how a client's adversary approaches a given situation can vary from one matter to the next. We begin any relationship unfamiliar with our client's adversary, so we have to rely on our client as far as anticipating the adversary's response is concerned.
We listen to our client when trying to anticipate what their adversary might do or how they might respond. Instead of insisting on following our own intuition, we trust and respect the fact that our client knows more than we do in this matter.

We're working for you, our clients, so hearing your thoughts, knowing your goals, and learning from your experience are vital to handling each case in the best way possible.
