What Does It Mean to Be “Results Driven” in Business Law?
Here at Calkins Law Firm, we work hard for our clients. In general, we like our clients to be well informed before they make decisions regarding business law matters. So we will go to great lengths to inform our clients about the risks and the opportunities in what they are contemplating.
We also feel strongly about service - it will forever be a core element of our philosophy. So long as our terms are met, we have always done whatever our clients have asked of us. That said, we feel the need to further explain what we mean when we say that Calkins Law Firm is driven by results. We are hoping to refine understanding by offering details from some true-to-life case studies and then applying the lessons learned.
Real-Life Results
About a year ago, one of our long-standing clients decided to sell one of his businesses. He proceeded to engage an investment banker and begin the path to selling. Early this year, a prospective buyer was found and for the next few months we worked very hard to make the sale happen. We collaborated with the client, his management team and professional advisors in an effort to see the sale through.
But something else was happening while we were working - a novel coronavirus, COVID-19, was staging a global pandemic. Lockdowns, financial crashes, and a myriad other catastrophes ensued. For their own reasons, the anticipated buyer walked away from our client's deal. We were unsatisfied with that result, as we had not been able to help our client achieve his objective. Thankfully, after more months of work on his project we were finally able to pinpoint another buyer and, just recently, our client celebrated the sale of his business.
Our work itself was something to be proud of, but only when we brought our client to the realization of his objective did we truly feel that our work was finished. We could then be satisfied that we had represented the client well. Such an outcome isn't unique to this client - we take the same approach with everyone.
Another example revolves around an out-of-town client. She approached us and asked if we would defend her in arbitration that was to be conducted locally. We did defend her, but we ended up doing far more. During the process we discovered that she had a valid counterclaim. The client was wholly unaware, but by the time our work was finished we had not only defended her case but had assisted her in recovering a tidy sum. When she originally approached us she was looking for defense help, but she received so much more. We are proud of that case, but even more so we were happy to be of service and to help that client get the results she deserved.
Key Takeaways
At Calkins Law Firm, we continue to be result-oriented business attorneys. We cannot guarantee that every client will enjoy the same results, but what we can promise is that regardless of the client or the case, we will always do our level best to achieve or exceed their goals and objectives.
We can confidently make that promise because we only take on projects that are within our collective areas of expertise. Our familiarity with and knowledge about a topic assure us that we can successfully tackle our client's request. Truth be told, it is unlikely that we will take on a new client if their case deals with unfamiliar matters outside of our knowledge base. If we don't feel that we have a strong likelihood of achieving the client's goals, or if we feel that their objectives are unattainable, we will have to respectfully decline their representation request.
But we are happy to say that while this situation may arise, our comprehensive professional and legal know-how generally allows us to accept a wide array of clients and cases. We certainly don't relish turning a potential client away, and are always on the lookout for ways to help.
